The Dark Horse is the only poetry magazine I subscribe to. Most of those magazines seem to me so full of mush that I can’t read them, and the Horse is refreshing by contrast. The greater part of the Horse’s content, by pages, is reviews and criticism, and the poems are scattered between. One thing I like is that it’s neither American nor UK but both, so that it affords a viewpoint beyond the local communities. PoemShape is the blog of Patrick Gillespie, the “Vermont Poet”. He writes about the traditional poetic techniques of rhyme and meter and analyzes poems that use them, paying special attention to their meter. His selections are from all of history since Chaucer and concentrate on the best-regarded works of well-known poets, though he also reviews contemporary poets. The blog is accessible to beginning students and at the same time well-researched and aware of historical context, so as far as I’m concerned it’s a win all around. |
