West with the Night review

My brief review of the 1942 autobiography West with the Night by Beryl Markham. An excellent book.

She was born in England in 1902, raised in British East Africa (now Kenya) from the age of four, hunted with Masai as a child, made her living as a race horse trainer and then an aviator, became famous as the first person to fly solo across the Atlantic from east to west, and capped it off by writing this amazing autobiography. It doesn’t have the polish that a professional writer would have given it, but that only makes it more vivid and lively.

Original version, August 1997.
