28 November 2002 - on this Thanksgiving

< yesterday -- tomorrow >

Metazoans are Heterotrophic

For all the bird’s misgiving,
From all the beaux esprits,
We thank on this Thanksgiving
The heavenly emcee
That turkeys spring eternal,
That corn grows from the kernel,
That death, the gate nocturnal,
Locks with a vernal key.

clue:

A parody drawing from the last two stanzas of the “The Garden of Proserpine” by Algernon Charles Swinburne, a poem praising death.

Happy Thanksgiving, Americans! And everybody else, have a happy day too.

metazoan - animal
heterotrophic - reliant on other organisms for food

give me a clue so sweet and true
