Intelligence is the ability to predict the future; the only way to decide on an action is to weigh its consequences. That’s how we tell that dinosaurs are smarter than horseshoe crabs, for example—the dinosaurs already know everything in their future, but the horseshoe crabs can still be surprised.

Ever had a surprise party? We’re not up to the smarts of horseshoe crabs.
