10 February 2006 - Holocaust denial

< yesterday -- tomorrow >

Walk off, walk off, Voltaire, Rousseau,
Walk off, walk off, the game is lost.
You can still publish sharp cartoons,
But not deny the Holocaust.

A parody of the opening of William Blake’s pro-Christian and anti-Enlightenment poem:

Mock on, mock on, Voltaire, Rousseau:
Mock on, mock on: ’tis all in vain!
You throw the sand against the wind,
And the wind blows it back again.

A number of European countries have “Holocaust denial” laws which in effect posit an official version of that part of history, and make it a crime to publically disagree. I think that is dangerous, though I have to add that the people who fall foul of these laws certainly seem to deserve it.

give me a clue so sweet and true
