To say there is no future in history is to say that the future will have
no history. It’s self-contradictory, or in other words, not strictly
true. We may be entering a period when the duration of history that
seems useful shrinks toward zero. When we leave that period, we’ll
realize the illusion, if we haven’t grown complacent.
