In a New Genre

Let’s draw the lesson from yesterday. Conventional things, no matter how unnatural, seem so natural that the conventions may disappear from view. And a set of culturally coordinated conventions establish a genre; that is the modern definition of genre. We are surrounded by unnamed invisible genres that control what we see. Forget about software update servers! I just redrafted my plan to become king of the world!

For example, Wikipedia says genre is “any form or type of communication... with socially-agreed-upon conventions developed over time.” That’s how I usually think of genre too.
