Why is history boring? Any hardworking biographer could tell you: Because it is colorless. The melodrama of the day is so little a mellow drama that the horizon grows embarrassed as each day breaks, but at the end of the polluted day the blood drains out entirely. It was supposed to be a nonlethal apocalypse!
