After the expansion of the universe was discovered, old theories of a steady-state universe had to resort to saying that matter is created from nothing—otherwise the cosmos becomes emptier and is not in a steady state. It seemed like an ad hoc patch, but weren’t they on to something? Where else does house dust come from?
