It could be worse. You could be reading a joke while all around you the once-stable edifices of democracy are etched away, while great military powers maneuver their armies for advantage, while lies boom with electronic amplification, while mighty states oppress their citizens by violence and intimidation, while hospitals overflow with epidemic victims and burst like pustules.
