Democracy is fragile by design: Vote against it, and it goes away. Fascist-style thugs out to intimidate count as a big vote. “Simon says, they’re some good people.” Economic problems bring out a desire for change under a strong leader, like Simon. Meanwhile, the more police favor using their hard power, the more the job attracts those of the above thugs who want a badge. It’s designed to be self-reinforcing and therefore stable, the opposite of democracy.
