The same is true of many other fields.
To explore new ways of writing is easy. Almost none of the possible techniques of writing has ever been tried, so almost any step you can take is exploratory. All you have to do is avoid stepping in the narrow lanes of footprints left by others.
If you disagree, draw a line around the blank territory and see if you can show that it is small or boring. You can’t know how much is unknown unless you can characterize it somehow.
