Latin poems

I can’t read Latin, but I do occasionally find good translations.

What strikes me about the ancient Latin poets is their beautifully accurate and slightly alien sense of dynamic shape. These poems aren’t hewn out or squared off like English poems, they’re turned on a lathe. That’s the kind of thing that lives through translation.

See for example this translation of Horace’s Ode 4.7 Diffugere Nives by A.E. Housman.
