A review for the public of Igor Stravinsky’s “The Rite of Spring” includes two obligatory elements. First, the reviewer must claim that the piece “sounds as fresh and modern today” as at its premier performance in 1913.

Second, and without batting an eyelid, the reviewer must report that the premier performance was booed.
