Once upon a time, after a rash of escapes from the royal dungeon, an inventor
built for the king a new apparatus for locking up prisoners. The king tested
it at once, locking up the inventor, so that, escape or not, the inventor’s
freedom was lost.
Governments still employ this system to support innovation.
