11 October 2003 - Katz and mouse

< yesterday -- tomorrow >

reporter: Word on the street is, the FBI wants this to be a Katz-and-mouse game. Do you have any comment?
FBI: No.
reporter: Aha! I knew you were up to something sleazy!
FBI: The FBI has a long and honorable history of refraining from interfering in partisan politics, except when we’re caught at it.
reporter: So you’re officially admitting racial motivations?
FBI: Look, J. Edgar Hoover is gone, OK? The 60’s are over, the civil rights movement is history, there are no civil rights. But we play nice now. We don’t annihilate politicians we don’t like unless there’s probable cause.
reporter: So you’re sure Street’s guilty?
FBI: No comment, but we’re all smart here. And we have to do something to wipe the egg from our faces for having our bug spotted.

clue:

FBI microphones were found in the office of Philadelphia mayor John Street, who is contesting a formerly-close election against Sam Katz. Hey, it may still be close, depending on whose supporters get more angry.
