Billions of years of organic evolution, and look what has happened: We no longer enjoy the simple pleasures of metabolizing hydrogen sulfide. Instead, we have the theory of relativity, which few understand, and atonal music, which few enjoy. Yet today, as never before, the broccoli of fate simmers in the delicate sauce of uninterpretable dreams. Progress turns energy into choices, and it is up to us to understand them and to like them.
