That’s test-pilot speak for “Suddenly it went out of control.” Armstrong made the correct split-second decision and safely ejected from the failed Lunar Landing Research Vehicle, and later went on to land a Lunar Module for which ejection seats would have been no use. Yet he wasn’t able to avoid another accident of English: That’s one small step for A man!

Apollo 11 landed on the moon 35 years ago, 20 July 1969.

Armstrong has always maintained that he said “That’s one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.” The recording can only be heard as “one small step for man.”
