A typical machine made in 1940 was simple and reliable, and designed so that if it broke anyway you could take it apart and fix it yourself. A machine made in 1960 was simple and reliable, but made so that it could not be taken apart. A machine made in 1980 was more capable and more complicated, and not as durable. A machine made in 2000 was thrown away so long ago that we’ve forgotten what it was like.
