A Sirius, I Mean, Syria’s Problem

Have you ever watched a supernova up close? Probably not. The first event, before you notice any change in the star, is that you die of radiation poisoning from the neutrino burst. Ordinary hazards we can cope with—just stand back the prescribed number of meters, kilometers, or astronomical units—but a supernova is on a different scale. So if Syria, where things are never as good as they look, has you down—relax! We can cope!

clue:

Sirius is not actually massive enough to go supernova. The radiation poisoning bit is cool but not QUITE true either. A good source is https://what-if.xkcd.com/73/
