The Value Of Implausible Excuses

A few rogue software engineers—what a great excuse! Why didn’t Enron think of that? Or Milli Vanilli? Or Miltiades? I have got to get in on this. Anybody need a mercenary software engineer in their past who, for a few extra shellfish under the table, will turn out to have gone rogue?
NB Pearls required.

clue:

“This was a couple of software engineers who put this in for whatever reason.” — Michael Horn, boss of VW’s U.S. operations

That’s Miltiades the Younger of ancient Greece.

give me a clue so sweet and true
