When I lived in a colder place, thick ice on the ground could be a problem. Some sprinkled salt, which melted tiny holes. Some showered salt, leaving a chunky slushy mess which was not much improvement. No one seemed to hit on the idea of laying down enough salt to break up the ice, then pushing the debris aside. Here we see a drawback of civilization: In an area outside your expertise, a two-step process is beyond imagination.
