Steamhammer beats Iron

Today Steamhammer 1.0 got to try, for the first time, its planned strategy versus Iron (Brood War replay file). It worked as intended, and Steamhammer won quickly. In the screenshot, Iron placed both its marines on the ramp, which made it easy. In my tests, the ramp still breaks and the bunker falls if Iron gets marines into the bunker.

Steamhammer breaks Iron’s ramp

I’m sure Igor Dimitrijevic will update Iron before long, but for the moment Iron loses to a standard 9 pool speedling opening—an opening that Steamhammer also plays 10% of the time versus other terrans, with fair success. Iron’s zergling defenses at that timing are not enough; the lings overwhelm the blocking SCVs and the bunker. Try the same against LetaBot and you will die!

By the way, getting zergling speed is critical versus terran. Zergling speed gives tactical and micro advantages against all races, but bots play poorly and don’t gain full value from the advantages versus protoss or zerg. But terrans have ranged units, and the gain from spending less time under fire before reaching the target is giant. It takes many more marines to overpower fast zerglings; marines should be unable to move out onto the map at all until academy tech. My suggestion: By the time you have 6 or more zerglings versus terran, you should at least be collecting gas to start Metabolic Boost. I think the main exceptions are unusual low-economy builds and zerglings for immediate emergency defense.

And my suggestion in case you're the Terran using bionic tech: train 2-3 firebats once you detect a pending big zergling attack (speedlings or not)

Jay Scott on :

Good advice! With 2 firebats + 1 medic in the group, zerglings risk melting away if they attack. Zerg is forced to tech, and that is what makes it fun.

BTW, I've noticed that when a typical bot makes use of bionic units, a medic's heal spell doesn't do as much good as in human play. Part of that is because marines and firebats get stimmed all the time with HPs dropping so rapidly that a medic can't really heal that much before the unit dies. The second issue is again caused by the extreme stim pack usage - the medics are almost always at 0 energy, which again precludes effective healing.
That said, Optical flare and Restoration have their place sometimes. Especially in TvZ

It would be helpful if you would also link the replay on the openBW. It is interesting to see the game.

Jay Scott on :

I didn’t want to do that because OpenBW doesn’t keep the replays, it fetches them from SSCAIT. I expect the link to go stale before long. Oh, but I could host the replay myself and give a permanent link. I’ll do that maybe today or tomorrow.

Jay Scott on :

I hosted the replay file, but I could not get OpenBW to play it by URL. I can download it and play it, and OpenBW understands the URL, but it doesn’t play. *shrug* Does it work for anybody else? http://www.openbw.com/replay-viewer/?rep=http%3A%2F%2Fsatirist.org%2Fdownloads%2Fstarcraft%2Freplays%2F182510-Stea_Iron-ZvT.rep

The replay from SSCAIT works fine. ;) http://www.openbw.com/replay-viewer/?rep=http%3A%2F%2Fsscaitournament.com%2FReplays%2FSTEAMHAMMER%2F182510-Stea_Iron-ZvT.rep

Nice shot! Though I don't think the build is viable as it is. Current version of Iron already handles this kind of Zergling spam quite well, isn't it? Firebats for bunker defense seems a good idea in general, but I have yet to find good uses of them that fit Iron's style. Against Zergling rushes it uses SCVs to block the ramp, in order to avoid or limit run by threats. The blocking SCVs need to be protected though and this is what Marines do. Marines can snipe Zerglings through the SCVs. Most of the time. Firebats can't. Being able to protect the blocking SCVs and to damage the attacking Zerglings while they are slowed down by the SCVs is the key in this strategy.

Jay Scott on :

You’re right, the build is not viable. It’s exploiting a weakness that can be fixed.

Jay Scott on :

And sure enough, the updated Iron’s defense is fully adequate. I guess Steamhammer will be losing some more games for a while!
