Zia’s evolution

Zia has followed a wandering course. The early versions opened 12-hatch and went mass mutalisks. Then it switched to a 9-pool opening. Then a fast rush opening. Now it is back to an economic opening, this time with mass lurkers and lings.

I suspect that Zia is collecting strategies. Some future version may have all the strategies available as choices. If it selects well, it will become a force to reckon with.

After watching more games, the current strategy only goes lurkers versus terran. Versus protoss Zia goes straight hydras. Versus zerg, if I could trust my memory I’d say it sticks with lings (but I don’t trust my memory). What will the next strategy be?

I was wrong! I saw a new Zia ZvZ and Zia went 2-base 3-hatch hydras against Tscmoo zerg’s 1-base mutas. Tscmoo could have won easily but wasted time chasing zerglings across the map, letting Zia build up too many hydras. Unfortunately Zia crashed as it was ravaging Tscmoo’s base. Lesson: At bot level of play, hydralisks are viable in ZvZ.

And now there is an even newer update. What does it do this time? :)

Zia’s play has become too complicated to sum up briefly! It knows a variety of openings and chooses between them, maybe by the same strategy learning as other bots, maybe some other way. Yesterday I watched it defeat DAIDOES, a protoss bot that goes ground + carriers, with zerglings + lurkers + scourge, not a combination I had seen before from Zia. I’m not sure it plays enough games on SSCAIT to show us everything it knows....
