hardware failure

Sorry about the long silence. I suffered a hardware failure while locked down away from home, and getting things done has been... a little... difficult. I rescued all my data, but it’s demoralizing. And I’m still in an awkward computing situation.

I have no new progress on Steamhammer. In fact, I’m thinking of rolling back the scouting work that is underway, just so I can get an update out sooner. I can merge it back in later.

Lurker on :

I really enjoy reading your blog, so I'm happy it was only your hardware that wasn't doing well. I guess that no matter what you do, these kind of annoying accidents have to be overcome.

Bytekeeper on :

At least subjectively, hardware has become incredibly reliable since the late 2000s. I can sympathise, sometimes this backfires...

You "rescued" your data, this looks like you don't do backups?

Not being at home when things crash&burn - in the beginning BASIL *always* started to lock up when I went on a trip. Of course it worked perfectly when I was at home....

Jay Scott on :

I brought a backup drive along and used it well. “Rescue” in this case is the work to lose no data rather than the small amount since I last plugged in the drive.

I did learn a lesson or two, though....
