6 February 2001 - baseball

< yesterday -- tomorrow >

Looking at a calendar of baseball ballparks entitled Hallowed Ground, I realized that the hole you’re buried in when you die is hollowed ground. And the game of baseball is about running in a circle until you come home—you can’t ask for a plainer religious metaphor. So the hidden message of the baseball religion is that you should seek to get the most out of life while you can, because you’re not around long and there’s always somebody trying to throw you out. That’s also why the word “fanatic” was shortened to “fan”.
