15 May 2010 - reinvent it

Slowly Gaining on Oscar Wilde

Any sufficiently short one-liner can be stolen safely—who’s to say you didn’t reinvent it? The secret purpose of the Daily Whale is to accumulate enough aphorism reputation that I will be credited with other people’s ideas.

clue:

Compare 16 November 2000.

I looked up a favorite 1991 Daily Whale line (“brevity is the soul of wit, but levity is the whole of it”) and found it had been stolen or reinvented a few times since then. It’s irritating either way!

I keep a file called “reject”, which has dozens of sayings that I wanted to use in the Daily Whale but found I had only reinvented. A few of them are excellent and took hard work to write! I probably have many other reinventions that I never noticed... that’s hard work too.
