Most people sensibly lock in their basic opinions with long-term contracts, hedging against volatility. But it seems that issues are increasingly appearing out of the blue, and our response is to seek short-term ideas on the fragmented spot market, often overcommitting to speculative positions. I know that indexing is all the rage, but I propose a radical strategy: Only take positions in issues you understand.
