An economist is an adherent of economism, the belief that the workings of an economy can be usefully understood. The general public has always known that this is false and historians have documented myriad cases in which economists went wrong with confidence. Physicists have the same confidence but are often right; economists are occasionally right so they stand one step above doomsday cultists.
