It’s not only the size of organizations that has increased over history, where we have goals we’ve also increased organizational coherence. Hunter-gatherers might be able to stampede food over a cliff and feast. We coordinate production chains with dozens of links over thousands of miles to shave the cost of sophisticated electronics so we can play Angry Birds. Lately a couple of prospective asteroid prospecting companies have sprung up, because we’re getting close to the point where mere global cooperation is not enough.
