High labor productivity brings prosperity. It’s a simple and obvious economic fact. How can we raise productivity? Economists like to pretend that gaining productivity is a slow process, but there is a quick fix: Hold a recession. Companies lay off their least productive workers first, and productivity rockets up. Sometimes I suspect that our political leaders are planning exactly that.
