A 2-dimensional map can be divided into quadrants by drawing two lines, one for each dimension. In astronomy, the galaxy is divided into quadrants by drawing lines through the Earth. It’s not entirely unnatural, since the Milky Way is flat. In science fiction, space is often divided into quadrants because the authors have been working with flat pages so long that they have forgotten the third dimension. Where are the octants?
