Do you miss the old days when a plague might take years to spread from one end of Eurasia to the other? It never crossed oceans at all. And if a quarter of the population died, why, everyone else was that much richer, and the blessings multiplied because epidemics were far more frequent. If we’re careful not to learn too much, eventually we could meet an unconquerable disease that will bring us back to those blissful times.
