The immune system is fabulously complex, a Rube Goldberg machine that
works—and works so well that infection cannot sustain itself unless
it tricks or jams or bypasses parts of the machine. A vaccine is the
same and opposite: It works by tricking the immune system into
fighting a pretend infection. To trick a machine that you don’t
understand, you have to get lucky.
