16 July 2021 - current statues

< yesterday -- tomorrow >

Nothing is wrong with public display of evil history. It’s better to remind people how bad things once were than to let them forget; see any Holocaust museum. The problem starts when people feel oppressed by the display, meaning that the old evil still operates. Those aren’t historical monuments, they are current monuments that happen to be old.

clue:

What do you do when, say, some valuable institution was founded by a slave trader using the profits? Do you more value the good done or the evil behind it? Change the name and sweep it under the rug, or put up a display and admit the unpleasant truth behind something that you are going to keep no matter what?

give me a clue so sweet and true
