story problem - An attempt to motivate a school math question by lending it a shred of realism to cover its nakedness. It does sometimes motivate the problem to run and hide when you wish it would stand up proudly.
Mathematics has been called many things. Among others, the queen of the
sciences and the handmaiden of the sciences. Therefore, while there
seems to be some doubt regarding its precise social position, there is
general agreement regarding its gender.
