Why does the Trump administration seek political control over science? That's easy: It's part of the authoritarian program. Authority over the truth is essential--or at least over the "truth". Therefore independent inquiry must be shut down, and inquiry as authoritative as science must be shut down hard. It's not about controlling science, it's about pruning most of it away.
