new bot Velicorandom

The name of the new bot Velicorandom is hard to interpret. It’s not “velocirandom”, which would refer to velociraptors. “Velico” might be from Bulgarian (though that would be properly transliterated as “veliko”), or might be from a romance language.

Whatever the name means, the bot looks like it is by the same author as Newbie Zerg. It follows the recent trend of random bots which play as differently as possible with each race (ChimeraBot, legacy). The trend is already starting to feel stale to me, but I don’t mind. The bots will make good tests of Steamhammer’s strategy adaptation as I implement it.

As terran, Velicorandom makes 3 barracks on 10 supply and tries to overrun you with mass unupgraded marines. It looks like it first attacks when it has 15. I’m not familiar with that specific build, but it’s similar in idea to MarineHell or UAlbertaBot’s mass marines.

As protoss, Velicorandom plays 10-12 gate zealots. That one should be familiar; Skynet plays it strongly against zerg, and other protoss bots also know the build. It’s slower to get moving but brings more zealots than UAlbertaBot’s 9-9 gate zealots.

As zerg, Velicorandom plays differently in each matchup. In ZvT, it goes 9 hatch 9 pool 9 gas and makes zerglings with speed. In ZvP, it does that build 50% of the time, and the rest follows another build I don’t know: 9 hatch 12 pool 13 gas, sunken up the natural, and try to win with mass mutalisks. I’m not sure what the point of 9 hatch 12 pool is; maybe I’ll play with it and see if I can find an advantage to the seemingly inefficient build order. In ZvZ, Velicorandom goes with the same 9 hatch 9 pool build as versus terran.

Versus a random opponent, and also versus the specific opponents Krasi0P, JumpyDoggoBot, and Newbie Zerg, Velicorandom answers with 7 pool 12 hatch, the hatchery coming after 5 pairs of zerglings. Newbie Zergrush used to play that build, and Steamhammer knows it too. The 7 pool should work well against random bots that go with a fast rush, and also against the 3 named rushbots, but I doubt it will see much success against the more solid ChimeraBot.

Of course, this is only today’s description. Past bots by this author have had frequent updates.

Interesting bot, I'm excited for purpledestiny :). What did you think of the SSCAIT SH games? It had kinda a rough go against thomas vajda.

Jay Scott on :

Without the command jam bug, Steamhammer beats XIMP reliably and all openings seem to win, so it doesn’t find a good one. With the command jam bug, it needs to start well. It’s a macro game, and the bug causes production to freeze repeatedly, scourge to fly past their targets, and other assorted disasters. I still expected to win, though.

Tully Elliston on :

Surprised we've not yet seen any bots that change their in-game name after each match to counter the learning bots.

Jay Scott on :

Well, they’re not allowed to.

Dan on :

Changing names on SSCAIT was specifically prohibited after 5 Pool did this to break opponent learning.

krasi0 on :

Interestingly he tried this again, i.e. he has asked me to change the name of his bot :D

Newbie Zerg on :

Sorry Krasi0 but why are you lying about my intentions?

As Jay pointed out the name is misspelt... That's all.

It's supposed to be Velocirandom and not Velicorandom, there is n0 other reason for a namechange seing as it does pretty well.

Seing your response when I've clearly explained this to you before is really silly. Makes one want to retract bots simply to avoid you. I also told you my 5 Pool variations in a discord PM...

Besides, I'm just trying to have fun. It's a free ladder without any reward. I uploaded AFTER SSCAIT tournament for a reason aswell (Drama cause of the past, stupid things happened. I blame both you and myself.) As mentioned, just trying to have fun and learn more. I Vote bots in, see games, learn from them, make changes, etc. Learning more by the day.

So a TLDR, Drama is unnessecary, simply be honest. If you have watched Newbie Zerg the last few days and how hard I vote it in vs top players just to see if they're breakable (Made another comment in here about that, also told you about it...) It tanked It's rating really hard. I don't care about rating. I just want to see which bots are beatable with my limited knowledge.

Best regards Muukzor.

Jay Scott on :

Eh, just tell people it’s Bulgarian and refers to greatness or splendor. It’s still a good name, just a little hard for most people to understand. :-) Look up велико or e.g. великолепно.

Newbie Zerg on :

Haha good idea.

This Random Cheese bot is destined for greatness ;)

Jokes aside, I guess It doesn't matter that much. The name is still alright.

Best Regards Muukzor.

Joseph Huang on :

Just disable it (upload empty zip), and make a new upload.

McRave on :

Boy I'd love to rename my Z and T some days. This odd itch that nothing matches.

MicroDK on :

I like the name and as a non-english native speaker I did not know that was a spelling mistake... ;) Veli is the turkish word for guardian or brother coming from Arabic meaning "friend of god"... so I would say the name fits well anyway. :D

MicroDK on :

Btw... Velico means sailing in Italian... :)
