Artificial intelligence, like other disciplines, includes both theoreticians, called “neats”, and practitioners, “scruffies”. The neats insist on having a theoretical justification for everything, although they don’t have a theory, while the scruffies just want to make things work, including impossible things.

The neats consider the indefeasible indefensible, while the scruffies defend the infeasible.
