According to the now-defunct school of Logical Positivism, science ought to proceed according to the hypothetico-deductive and deductive-nomological methods. These methods are carefully thought out, rigorously specified, and utterly unhelpful.

The third purpose of philosophy is to invent ever longer names for things which are ever less likely to exist.
