Freedom is a kind of adaptability. A free society adapts itself to the insights of all its members, instead of being straitjacketed by a ruling ideology. And adaptability is a kind of instability; free people can choose wrongly, even to the point of losing freedom.

Or at least to the point of tabloid newspapers.
