The Air Force plans to have the Airborne Laser ready for testing in 2002. They’ll need that long to subdue the fearsome technical challenges of shooting down boosting theater ballistic missiles at long range from a moving aircraft.

My mole, Deep Weasel, tells me that the project managers are on the ball this time. ABL is revolutionary, way different from all previous weapon systems, and fantastically difficult too. Since this is a government program, that’s a virtual guarantee it will succeed.
