The Surface Transportation Policy Project,
a hardnosed starry-eyed advocacy group,
alleges that walking is the riskiest mode of travel.
For every 1,000,000,000 miles traversed,
flyers died at the rate of two per million and
drivers died at the rate of 105 per million.
Not a single pedestrian survived the whole distance.
They didn’t calculate the fatality rate for astronauts,
but I’d venture to guess that the safest route to the
corner store is suborbital rocket.
