8 August 2000 - Earth’s backyard
< yesterday --
tomorrow >
Hey listen, the news says a planet was discovered in Earth’s backyard.
That’s cool, but y’know, when I looked in my backyard there was only a
teeny tiny little bit of a planet, just dirt and stuff.
Nothing much to look at. Weeds surviving.
So I’m like wondering, is “backyard” one of those words
that don’t mean what it says, like “reality television”?
clue:
A planet has been discovered orbiting the nearby star Epsilon Eridani,
“only” ten light-years away.
I calculate that it would take about fifteen million years to drive that far.
