25 August 2006 - where are they?

< yesterday -- tomorrow >

Where are the terrorists hiding in the U.S.? Let’s work this out logically. They’re not getting arrested; the only arrests are clowns who’d be lucky to learn enough to blow themselves up. They’re not running around free, either, because even a complex plot can be pulled together in a year; by now they could have resculpted Mount Rushmore. And it’s not that we’re keeping them out of the country; the no-fly list is good for controlling Ted Kennedy and Cat Stevens, but it doesn’t work against an organization that can afford $100 for a fake passport.

Only one possibility remains, a possibility consistent with the American attitude that preventing attacks comes first. Infiltrating terrorists are spotted by the bug-eye of Total Information Awareness and are quietly, illegally, disappeared. The only logical conclusion is that all the seeming government incompetence is a ploy to hide the naked spider of power that lurks at the center of the all-knowing web.
