19 October 2006 - genocide 2

< yesterday -- tomorrow >

Where I live, it is fall and the annual genocide of the leaves is underway as the trees murder their offshoots. School has started, and paper makers carry out a genocide of the trees for the students, who complain that early morning classes constitute genocide. But the worst is the genocide of the words.

“Genocide” is becoming overused to the point that its meaning is shifting. It is going the way of “literacy”, which now means “something I think you should learn”.

give me a clue so sweet and true
