18 December 2006 - corruption rule

< yesterday -- tomorrow >

loyal counsellor: Sorry to be a bother, sir. But you’ve broken the corruption rule.
Tony Blair: Breaking rules is rather the point of corruption, wouldn’t you say?
counsellor: The rule is to keep it quiet.
Blair: Closing the investigation should do the trick, then.
counsellor: But it got into the papers.
Blair: Would have done later, if we waited.
counsellor: So the choice is plain. By principle of least effort we should have waited and hoped for a miracle.
Blair: Better to show our hand. The Third World will love us if we demonstrate that we share their values.
royal councellor: Still those dreams of empire.
