First Theory

Laziness evolved because in ancient societies hard work only got you so far. Sometimes it was better to conserve resources. Today, the situation is reversed: Ironically, the couch potato lifestyle became possible and counterproductive at the same time.

When I am king of the world, I’ll know better than to outlaw laziness. My police wouldn’t feel like enforcing it. Instead I’ll decree “egalitarian” income caps, making laziness adaptive again, until my genetic engineers find the solution.
