First, make a reference to the canon to prove that you know what you’re doing. Then, by implication, anything else you do is meaningful, so add something random and you are instantly profound. The frog jumps in, plop!

Since this is the 21st century, the frog is not random. It is a dual reference to the E.B. White quote about analyzing humor and to the Basho haiku. By implication, every other Whale is meaningful.
