Blowing Things Apart to Hold Things Together

Fire is one of the oldest technologies, and we long since learned to use it in sophisticated ways. For example, when the mortar of society crumbles, to reform the structure we start with mortars, a strikingly indirect use of indirect fire. Well, if it defies rational explanation that may be because the basic procedure is older than science. We still know that in the end the conflagration will bring about a new building.
